The Art Heals Violence (AHV) Initiative is a collaborative program facilitated by the St. Louis Arts Chamber of Commerce combining performances and exhibitions with neighborhood participation to address the pervasive issue of violence in the region. This initiative is designed to utilize skill and creative imagination to address the local interactions that often lead to or facilitate violence in our region’s high risk neighborhoods. We have many events planned for this initiative!

For theSoul Box event, the StL Arts Chamber is working with the Soul Box Project in Portland to fold origami boxes, one for each life taken and injured by gun violence. The St. Louis Metropolitan region averages approximately 6,000 violent crimes (not all gun related) every year. Our goal is to created 6,000 origami soul boxes to contribute to the more than 166,000 (and growing) soul boxes collected by the Portland project. The collected boxes will then be included in exhibitions around the country included the one here. Soul Box Project in Portland will be bringing their exhibition here to join with our contribution. o crea

Anyone can join from anywhere! Fold for yourself or get people together for a virtual or in person folding party.  Many participants enjoy the craft while others find the action of folding the box reflective, almost meditative. However you respond, help raise awareness of violence, especially in a region known for it, by folding boxes and bringing them to the StL Arts Chamber.

To get started, you need paper (8.5 x 11 is fine), and a ruler or straight edge is helpful. You can use plain white copy paper, paper with printed designs or decorate your own. Each box represents a person. What would you like the box to say?

Here is a video showing how to fold a soul box.

When you have made the boxes, contact the StL Arts Chamber at 314 275 0888 to arrange for drop off.

    Thank you!

Happy Birthday Missouri! August 10, 2021 if the 200th anniversary of statehood.  StL Arts Chamber, artists and arts organizations are throwing a party. Join us for the ArtFest and Ice Cream Social on August 7th from 10AM to 2PM from Grand Center through the Hodiamont Greenway to the Delmar Loop for art, performance and ICE CREAM!

We are going for the Guiness Book of World Records for the largest ice cream social and need your help. The curent record is 962 participants in an ice cream social in Italy. With Bold Spoon Creamery and Baked Bear selling ice cream, certainly, St. Louis can top that! After all, the ice cream cone was popularized right here at the 1904 World's Fair.

Thinking of the 1904 World's Fair, did you know that Meet Me in Sst. Louis was actually written and set in the Academy Neighborhood, one of the neighborhoods along the Hodaimont Greenway? Join the St. Louis Public Library at the ArtFest to find out more and have some fun.

Some of the fun to watch for includes performances by Shakespeare Festival, Blues and Jazz musicians, a children's street dance competition with Consuming Kinetics Dance Company, a parade by Joy Parade and so much more

The map of the festivities and loations of programming will be posted here soon.

And, keep watching as we are adding other locations to our ArtFest and Ice Cream Social birthday bash!

The StL Arts Chamber designed a city wide collaborative project to celebrate art and nature that has been postponed from 2020, but that does not mean the project is over.  The event will be rescheduled for either fall 2021 or spring 2022.

Events will begin with the exhibition of the Silent Skies Mural. The mural is a 678 piece collection of 8″x8″ squares of all the endangered birds of the world. The mural was created by 150 signature members of the international Artists for Conservation in 2018. Due to its size, parts of the mural will be hosted in three different venues. The St Louis Zoo is our primary host with half of the total mural. The Missouri Botanical Garden will host part of the mural from locations where it is restoring habitat. The St Louis Arch will host parts of the mural related to the birds migrating the Mississippi Flyway. With so much to do, consider staying overnight.

Check out places you have been before and find new favorites from our partners. Tour gardens with the Master Gardeners, enjoy the opening of Park-Like with the Pullitzer, join the Art Museum for an interpretative talk of SLAM Underground, create origami animals at Earth Day Festival and, for the stroller set, Contemporary Art Museum. See student work at the Galleries of Heartland Art Club and participate in creative art programs for children with Art Unleashed, the Magic House and Magic House MADE. There are 3 art and photography workshops scheduled for adults as well. St Charles County and Master Naturalists will be celebrating Birds in the Park and find out what you can do to support birds with the Lights Out St Louis project. International Dark Skies Association-Missouri will host a talk and interpretative sky watching party at the Arch. National Dance Week-St. Louis and Storytelling Festival will have performers addressing nature. The StL Symphony is performing Rite of Spring. So many more partners and additional events added all the time.
